Wimbledon Adopts Video Review System This Season.

Wimbledon tennis court with replay technology

The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in implementing replay technology.

Video review systems will make its debut at Wimbledon for the 2025 edition.

Athletes are granted the option to question particular rulings from the official, mirroring the system currently in use at each of the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

This technology will be accessible on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the remaining featured courts when they are staging singles matches.

This move arrives only a season following the AELTC implemented electronic line calling, which effectively ended the centuries-old tradition of line judges.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Competitors will not be permitted to dispute the call of the electronic line calling, but are allowed to ask for the official to review specific decisions, including:

  • Whether a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a shot touched an opponent's racquet or person during play.
  • Potential interference at the conclusion of a rally.

Notably, there will be an unlimited number on the amount of reviews a player can initiate.

Case in Point

An illustrative incident occurred in a recent tournament recently, where Daniil Medvedev initiated the video challenge against Jack Draper.

The British player conceded it was a tough call for the official, but thought his rival had "played the rules quite well."

The umpire watched a video and determined the player was guilty of hindrance, awarding the rally to his opponent.

Broader Adoption

This technology aren't new for Grand Slams. The system has been in use at the American major for two years and the Australian Open since 2025.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by next season the men's ATP Tour plans to have video reviews in place at every one of its tournaments.

Additional Innovations

A further change at Wimbledon 2025 involves the addition of graphical cues on displays to support the verbal announcements from the ELC system.

This solves instances where spectators have sometimes been uncertain whether a shot was in or out.

In other news, with precisely 100 days remaining until the start of the tournament, the AELTC have also revealed an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
