The artist has donated the full amount of his £25k Mercury Prize winnings to the Music Venues Trust, which operates to preserve the United Kingdom's small music venues.

Fender was awarded the cheque on October 16 as his new release the album was chosen as the top album of the previous year.

He has opted to hand the money over to the Music Venues Trust, in recognition of the vital role local spots fulfilled in his beginning days.

"As an artist couldn't be pursuing what I am doing today if it weren't for all the performances I played around the area, and elsewhere, when I was beginning," said the artist. "These locations are legendary, but they are facing challenges."

Beginning in 2023, at least 150 of these spaces have permanently closed – roughly 16 percent of the total UK scene.

Over the past year, top acts such as Pulp, Coldplay, the singer Katy Perry and Sheeran have all aided the Music Venues Trust in its attempts to keep the scene afloat, by including a minor surcharge to their ticket prices, which goes to help independent venues.

Sam Fender also joined in, raising in excess of £100,000 on his live tour to help numerous small stages across the UK.

The money supported locations that were confronting potential shutdown due to issues arising from floods, blazes and family tragedies, as well as licensing issues, legal disputes and sound issues.

Some locations received financial assistance in modernizing infrastructure and technical equipment that helped performers and concertgoers.

"The notion that money from performances in major spaces supports the local stages, where it all starts for artists like me, is just sensible," Sam Fender has stated.

Fender is far from the only musician to contribute his honor winnings to charitable organizations.

Back when the band earned the award in the year 1996 for their record their work, frontman Cocker stated that the band would contribute their prize money to the charity War Child.

During 2002, musician the artist split her bounty across several charities, like the NSPCC and a Sickle Cell charity.

"I also donated a £1,000 to Highgate Newtown, to their gymnastics class, because I practiced gymnastics when I was growing up and they required better apparatus," the artist explained to a publication.

Two years ago, they contributed their winnings to the local youth club that nurtured their act, as well as other grassroots music organisations.

Additionally winners that year M People donated their winnings to a MS organization after a close contact was found to have the condition.

"The victory was quite enough," stated vocalist Small. "The money was the bonus but we could do without the cherry, because we had the main prize. So our success touched the lives of others."

Last week, the trust revealed it had protected two grassroots venues in the South East, by transferring them to local control.

The Joiners in that area and the second in that location were bought under the community ownership initiative, which is supported by a national body and supporters who purchase "stakes" in the venues.
