The Cadillac F1 team Adopts NASA Playbook to Build Squad from the Ground Up for Melbourne Race Debut.

Approximately one year previously at the Vegas Grand Prix, the Cadillac racing team were ultimately granted the green light as the world of Formula One's latest participant for the 2026 season. Building the team from scratch has involved a hectic pace of work that the principal, Graeme Lowdon, has compared to the NASA lunar mission. As F1 descends on Vegas this weekend, the team are aware time is getting tight.

The Countdown to Melbourne

At the last event of the season to be staged in the America, with approximately a hundred days to go before they make their debut for the first time in Australia at the 2026 season opener, the Cadillac F1 project have come on in leaps and bounds but, in what must seem like a never-ending challenge, they are cognizant there will not be sufficient time.

The technical director, Nick Chester, came aboard the newly formed team in the spring of 2023 shortly after it was formed, when the team were without even an confirmed place. He has been at its center from that point and enjoys a amused expression when reflecting on the journey.

“There might be a short period looking back at what you’ve done and go: ‘Incredible, how impressive what the team has created in under three years,’” Chester states. “Then the next minute you think: ‘Well, there is still a significant amount to do.’”

An Unprecedented Opportunity

Chester enjoyed success at the Renault team in Fernando Alonso’s title-winning campaigns of the mid-2000s and was in command of technical direction at the new Mercedes-Benz Formula E team, but no previous experience has truly matched the mission of launching the quintessentially American Cadillac brand, a works entry backed by the corporate entity, GM, into F1.

“Establishing an grand prix team from scratch, when will you ever have the possibility to do that?” he says. “It's unparalleled. In an established team you won't have the chance to change organizational mindset.”

With each day that goes by thoughts are sharper on the impending moment of truth in Melbourne and targets are being set realistically.

“It's reasonable to expect that a brand-new squad coming in is likely to start at the back but simply getting on to the grid will be an accomplishment in itself,” Graeme Lowdon commented earlier this year and while Chester echoed this he felt the team had a statement to make as well.
“Our primary goal we intend to prove is that we should be there,” Chester explains. “So that we arrive and we operate well. We aim to demonstrate that we’re a proper team performing the right things on the track. After we prove that our credentials are solid, then we want to show progression from there on.”

Driver Lineup and Team Building Effort

In the summer they contracted Checo Pérez and Valtteri as their racers for 2026, a duo notable for their invaluable experience in competing at the sharp end in two championship-winning squads, the Red Bull team and Mercedes-AMG, and the Finnish driver reflected the sentiment of determined optimism.

“Of course, we’re realistic,” he said. “We have a huge amount of work to do, and it will likely be almost certainly a challenging beginning, because it is F1. But we’re not there to finish last. I am confident given this organization, with this group, this staff, there’s no reason why we shouldn’t be able to progress rapidly to a competitive level and enjoy some success.”

To realize that ambition staff acquisition has been in full swing, with employees now up to over 400 and scheduled to attain the objective of six hundred swiftly. Complementing their present headquarters at the UK base, the squad are in the phase of finishing an HQ at Fishers, Indiana in Indy and there is the GM works in Charlotte, where they are constructing the center to produce the new engine, set for 2029 – in the meantime they will run Ferrari engines – and the Toyota wind tunnel in Cologne, Germany. It is a sophisticated structure, contrary to the trend in Formula One for increased consolidation, and has prompted the fresh organizational mindset to which the CTO referred.

Apollo Model

“It's closely based on the Apollo project,” remarked Graeme Lowdon ahead of the Silverstone race in the summer. “We have a clear-eyed view, we know how challenging it is. The schedules, are extremely compressed. Well, it's not a space expedition, but it feels like it sometimes.”

So they have adopted, rather than the conventional chain of command, a non-hierarchical approach comparable to that of Nasa’s, where there were a variety of project teams all focusing on various components of the program in a multiple sites.

“In a system where you follow a procedure where someone has a problem and they escalate it to their supervisor, that supervisor talks to a leader in another department, it goes back down the chain, it’s super slow,” says Nick Chester. “Therefore we enable team members to really get on with it. Eliminating managerial sign-off for all decisions is far more efficient and more rapid.”

The Future

The success of this nimble strategy will be evaluated in the heat of competition when the season begins and there is a considerable amount at stake for F1, too. Cadillac have recruited as their test driver the 25-year-old Californian Colton Herta
