RAF Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with France's air force in a joint strike against an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory employed by the Daesh militant organization, according to the UK's MoD.
The site, located using intelligence, was thought to be storing arms and explosives, the announcement noted, and was situated in mountainous terrain just above the ancient city of Palmyra in central Syria.
"The RAF jets used precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to hit a several entry passages leading to the site... initial indications are that the objective was successfully hit," officials stated.
There was no evidence of any civilian impact in the strike on Saturday evening and every plane involved returned safely, the defence officials confirmed.
The British jets were backed up by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.
IS - also known as Daesh - imposed jihadist rule over significant areas in both Syria and Iraq before its territorial defeat in 2019.
"This operation underscores the UK's leading role, and commitment to operate in unison with our partners, to eradicate any resurgence of Daesh and their dangerous and violent ideologies in the Middle East," the British Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary stated.
British military aircraft have performed surveillance missions over Syria to "prevent any efforts to regroup" of Islamic State subsequent to its defeat at the climactic battle in Baghuz in the year 2019, the MoD reported.
"I want to thank the personnel of British forces participating in this strike for their skill and their bravery," the Defence Secretary added. "They were part of a great many UK service members on duty over the festive period. This action, to eliminate dangerous terrorists who pose a risk to our way of life, shows how British military are ready to step up, continuously, protecting the UK domestically and powerful internationally."
During December, the American forces carried out what it called a "large-scale strike" targeting Islamic State objectives in Syria, following an assault killed two American soldiers and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.
The UN estimates IS still has an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 fighters in Iraq and Syria.
